Lincoln County, located in the beautiful state of Maine, has a rich history that dates back to the early European settlements in North America. The county was established on June 19, 1760, and named in honor of Thomas Pownall, a British colonial governor, who was a former Member of the Parliament from Lincoln, England. The county was once part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay before Maine became a separate state in 1820.

Early settlers in Lincoln County were primarily attracted by its fertile soil and ample resources, with the local economy primarily focused on agriculture, fisheries, and shipbuilding. The region encompassed notable shipbuilding towns like Wiscasset, Boothbay, and Damariscotta. Wiscasset, the county seat, was an important seaport in the 18th century and was once considered to be the busiest port on the East Coast north of Boston, Massachusetts.

During the American Revolutionary War, the Battle of Boothbay Harbor occurred off the coast of Lincoln County in 1775. In 1848, Sagadahoc County was established, taking away some of the lands that initially belonged to Lincoln County, including Phipsburg, Bath, and Georgetown.

A fun fact about Lincoln County is that it is home to the Maine Coastal Island National Wildlife Refuge, which spans multiple islands and protects the habitats of various bird species, including the Atlantic Puffin, with some islands specifically managed for these remarkable birds. These islands attract many visitors and birdwatchers from all over the world.

Today, the charming small towns, picturesque coastlines, and rich cultural heritage of Lincoln County continue to attract visitors and residents who appreciate its natural beauty, history, and warm sense of community.
