The region was first inhabited by the Western Abenaki tribe, and European settlers started arriving in the late 18th century. The area consisted of fertile land, vast forests, and water power, making it ideal for farming, logging, and milling industries. Early settlements were established along the Androscoggin River, which served as a vital transportation route. Oxford County was created on March 4, 1805, when it was split away from Cumberland and York Counties.

Throughout its history, Oxford County has primarily been a rural area with several small towns and villages. The region contributed significantly to the growth of the lumber and manufacturing industries in Maine during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Sawmills and gristmills emerged in towns such as Fryeburg, Norway, and Waterford. The establishment of railroads in the late 19th century also helped transform Oxford County into a popular tourist destination featuring scenic landscapes and outdoor recreational facilities.

Presently, Oxford County is known for its picturesque lakes, rivers, and mountains, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The county is home to the White Mountain National Forest, as well as other natural attractions such as Grafton Notch State Park and the Appalachian Trail.

Fun Fact: One of the most famous landmarks in Oxford County is the "Screw Augur Falls" located in Grafton Notch State Park. It features unique churning waterfalls created by the Bear River, which carves through the granite rock, creating mesmerizing natural water slides and pools.
