Piscataquis County, located in the great state of Maine, was established on March 23, 1838. It was carved out of portions of Penobscot and Somerset Counties due to the growing agricultural and timber industries in the region. Piscataquis is known for its abundance of rivers and tributaries that run throughout the county, ultimately contributing to its name, which is derived from an Abenaki word "piscataquois," meaning "branchy river."

The county is home to roughly 17,000 residents, making it one of the most sparsely populated regions in the state. It covers an area of approximately 4,378 square miles, with extensive forests, rivers, and lakes. The county also contains a portion of the Appalachian Trail, which spans over 2,000 miles from Georgia to Maine.

Piscataquis County contains numerous historical sites and landmarks, such as the restored Mill Complex in Dover-Foxcroft, which now houses the Center Theatre for the Performing Arts and the Dover-Foxcroft Historical Society, showcasing the rich heritage of the region.

One fun fact about the region is the interesting roadside attraction known as the "Big Squaw Mountain Ski Area's abandoned chairlift." This abandoned ski area located in Greenville Junction, Piscataquis County, was once a popular ski destination, but now it remains as a unique attraction with an eerie, abandoned look capturing the attention of travelers and locals alike.
