Waldo County is located in the great state of Maine and was established on July 3, 1827. The county was named after Brigadier General Samuel Waldo, a land speculator and proprietor of the Waldo Patent, which covered a significant part of present-day Maine. The county's seat is the city of Belfast.

Waldo County has a rich history that dates back to pre-colonial times when Native Americans inhabited the region. Europeans, primarily English settlers, began arriving in the early 17th century and established a fishing and trade relationship with the indigenous people. Over the following centuries, the area witnessed rapid growth in settlements and population, with agriculture, lumber, shipbuilding, and maritime commerce serving as economic pillars.

In the 19th century, Waldo County played a role in the abolitionist movement, with Belfast being an important stop on the Underground Railroad, helping African-American slaves reach freedom in Canada. During this time, many prominent and historical figures lived in the county, including Captain Albert W. Stevens, who was a successful balloonist and inventor.

As a fun fact, Waldo County is known for its picturesque landscapes, including the Hills to Sea Trail a 47-mile walking trail that connects Belfast on Penobscot Bay to Unity through an extensive network of conserved lands. This trail offers a unique and scenic experience for nature lovers and hikers.
