Alcona County is located in the northeastern part of the Lower Peninsula of the great state of Michigan. Established on April 1, 1840, its original name was "Negwegon County," named after a Native American chief from the Chippewa tribe. However, on March 8, 1843, the name was changed to "Alcona County," a made-up term created by fusing words from the languages of its early European and Native American settlers, particularly taking inspiration from words meaning "excellent" or "fine plain."

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the primary industries in Alcona County were lumbering and agriculture, followed by the rise of tourism in the 20th century. As part of the Huron National Forest and the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the county attracts visitors for recreation such as hunting, fishing, hiking, and water sports.

A fun fact about Alcona County is that it is home to Sturgeon Point Lighthouse, which was built in 1869 to help guide ships through the shallow waters along Lake Huron's shoreline. Today, the lighthouse is not only a historic site on the National Register of Historic Places but also serves as a maritime museum for visitors to explore.
