Allegan County, located in the great state of Michigan, was first established on April 2, 1831 by an act of the Michigan Territorial Legislature. Initially, the county was comprised of the southwestern portion of Michigan Territory and included all of the present-day counties of Van Buren, Kalamazoo, and part of Barry. As the constituent counties were formed, Allegan County adjusted to its current boundaries by 1840.

The name "Allegan" was coined by government surveyor Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, who combined the words "Allegheny" and "Michigan" to form a unique moniker. The county seat is located in the city of Allegan, positioned near the center of the county.

Throughout its history, Allegan County has been primarily characterized by its agricultural economy, with fruit farming and the cultivation of corn, soybeans, and wheat as its mainstays. The region also gained prominence in the lumber and manufacturing industries during the 19th and 20th centuries.

The county offers various recreational opportunities, especially along Lake Michigan, which forms its western border, providing beautiful beaches and access to numerous parks, including Allegan State Forest and Saugatuck Dunes State Park.

Fun fact: Allegan County is home to the world's largest weathervane, which stands at a staggering 48 feet tall and is located in the city of Montague. This one-of-a-kind landmark features a 26-foot hand-forged wind arrow and is made of aluminum, making it a must-see attraction for visitors to the area.
