Alpena County, located in the great state of Michigan, was officially established on February 7, 1857. Situated in the northeastern part of lower Michigan, the county was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Ojibwe and Ottawa before European settlers arrived in the early 19th century. The area was named after Alpena, a word believed to be derived from the Algonquin term "Alpen" which means "partridge".

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Alpena County experienced significant growth due to the booming lumber industry. The city of Alpena, the county seat, was also officially incorporated in 1871. As the lumber mills thrived, the city developed rapidly, becoming a bustling center for commerce, industry, and transportation, primarily by lake vessels during this era.

In the following years, Alpena County continued to grow with focus shifting from lumber to other industries like cement production, as well as the establishment of a thriving fishing community. Today, the county's economy is more diversified, encompassing sectors such as manufacturing, health care, and retail.

One fun fact about Alpena County is that it is home to the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, America's only freshwater marine sanctuary. This 4,300-square-mile sanctuary was established in 2000 to preserve an extraordinary collection of over 200 shipwrecks, which offer both historical and recreational opportunities for visitors, including scuba diving, snorkeling, and glass-bottom boat tours. The marine sanctuary is a testament to the rich maritime history and cultural heritage of the Great Lakes region.
