Bay County is located in the eastern-central region of Michigan and is part of the Great Lakes Bay Region. Established on February 17, 1857, the county has a rich historical background. Its development was primarily influenced by its strategic location on the Saginaw River, which facilitated trade and transportation. Bay City, the county seat, was first settled in the 1830s and was originally called Lower Saginaw until its incorporation in 1865.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Bay County flourished due to its thriving lumber and shipbuilding industries. The region's abundant white pine forests catalyzed the growth of the lumber trade, leading to the establishment of numerous sawmills along the river. Some of the largest and most luxurious wooden ships, also known as "Lumber Hookers," were built in Bay County, notably contributing to the local economy. Gradually, the region diversified its industries, and it now hosts businesses in the fields of manufacturing, agriculture, and service.

A fun fact about Bay County is that it is home to the Hell's Half Mile Film and Music Festival, which was first held in 2006. The festival is named after a notorious stretch of the Saginaw River known for its lively nightlife and entertainment during the lumbering era. Today, the event celebrates independent film and music, attracting audiences from across the United States.
