Benzie County is located in the picturesque northwestern region of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Established in 1863, the county was originally a part of neighboring Leelanau County before it was separated and named after the French-Canadian explorer Joseph Ziewacz, whose nickname was "Benzonia." Eventually, the name was shortened to Benzie.

With an area of approximately 321 square miles, the county boasts a diverse geography consisting of forests, wetlands, rivers, lakes, and sand dunes. Benzie County has a long history of lumber and agriculture industries, which were the backbone of the local economy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, these industries have evolved, and tourism, recreation, and small businesses also contribute significantly to the economy.

One fun fact about Benzie County is that it holds the title of having the smallest county seat in Michigan - the village of Beulah. Moreover, the county is home to the "Most Beautiful Place in America," as selected by Good Morning America in 2011: the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The park spans over 35 miles along the eastern coast of Lake Michigan and features stunning sand dunes, bluffs, forests, and beaches, attracting visitors from all over the world.
