Berrien County is a beautiful region in the southwestern part of the state of Michigan, along the eastern bank of Lake Michigan. The area was first inhabited by the Ottawa, Chippewa, and Potawatomi Native American tribes. European settlers began arriving in the late 17th and early 18th centuries when French explorers and fur traders started to explore the region.

In the late 1820s, Joseph Bertrand, a French Canadian, set up a trading post in the area of the St. Joseph River Valley. The county was officially established on December 29, 1829, and was named after John M. Berrien, an American lawyer and statesman who was serving as the United States Attorney General when the county was established. Berrien is considered a founder of the Whig party and was later appointed as a justice of the state of Georgia's Supreme Court.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the region went through significant development with the establishment of numerous towns, the opening of the St. Joseph-Detroit, and the Port Huron-Chicago railway line running through the county, bolstering its economy and boosting population growth.

Today, Berrien County holds a population of around 154,000 people and spans across an area of about 1,581 square miles. The county is known for its beautiful beaches, parks, and natural resources, attracting visitors from around the country. Lakeside towns like New Buffalo, St. Joseph, and Benton Harbor form key areas within the county.

Here's a fun fact about Berrien County: it is referred to as the "Niagara of the Midwest" because of its abundant fruit production, particularly grapes. The region's unique climate, heavily influenced by Lake Michigan, enables a thriving wine industry, with numerous award-winning wineries and vineyards dotting the landscape.
