Cass County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Michigan, USA. It was established in 1829 and named after Lewis Cass, who was the governor of the Michigan Territory at the time and later became a U.S. Senator from the state. The county seat and the largest city in Cass County is Cassopolis.

Initially, the land was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Potawatomi, Miami, and Ottawa, until European settlers began arriving in the early 19th century. During the 1830s, the arrival of white settlers and the resulting land disputes with the native tribes led to the infamous "Trail of Death," a forced removal operation that caused the death of several members of the Potawatomi tribe.

Agriculture was the primary driver of the economy in Cass County, with early settlers engaging in farming, dairy production, and fruit-growing. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the area also saw significant lumber, milling, and manufacturing industries. Cass County is known for its lakes and is a popular destination for fishing, boating, and other water-based recreational activities.

A fun fact about Cass County is the existence of the unincorporated community of Pokagon within its borders. Pokagon is named after the chief of the Potawatomi tribe, Chief Leopold Pokagon, who refused to leave the area with his tribe during the forced removals and later gained U.S. citizenship. Pokagon's descendants still live in the region today, and the village contains the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians tribal headquarters.
