Charlevoix County is a picturesque region in northwest Michigan, known for its beautiful lakes and charming towns. The county was established on April 12, 1840, and originally named Keskkauko County, after a local Ottawa Indian Chief. In October 1843, the name was changed to Charlevoix County, honoring Pierre Franois-Xavier de Charlevoix, a French Jesuit explorer who travelled through the Great Lakes region in the early 18th century.

The first European settlements in the area began in the 1850s, primarily driven by the lumber industry, and small communities began to grow around the abundant resources. The City of Charlevoix, which serves as the county seat, was officially incorporated in 1879. The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century significantly boosted the local economy, as it provided easier access to markets and brought many tourists to the waterfront towns, leading to the development of a thriving tourism industry.

In the early 20th century, tourism became a major economic driver in the region, with the establishment of grand hotels and summer resorts, golf courses, and other recreational facilities. The area's enchanting landscapes, crystal clear lakes, and vibrant summer communities soon made Charlevoix County a popular vacation destination for Midwest residents, a reputation that has been preserved to this day.

A fun fact about Charlevoix County is that it is home to the unique architectural work of Earl Young, referred to as the "Mushroom Houses." These whimsical stone houses, built between the 1920s and the 1950s, showcase Young's creative use of local materials and his passion for integrating architecture with the natural surroundings.
