Chippewa County, located in the eastern Upper Peninsula of the great state of Michigan, was founded in 1826, originally as part of Michigan Territory before Michigan became a state in 1837. The county was named after the Native American tribe known as the Anishinaabe "Ojibwa" (Chippewa in English). The rich history of Chippewa County is underscored by its deep connections with Native American tribes and a booming fur trade in the early 19th century.

Sault Ste. Marie, the county seat, is one of the oldest cities in Michigan and the United States, having been settled by French missionaries in the 17th century. The famous Soo Locks are located in Sault Ste. Marie, playing a pivotal role in the transportation of goods (particularly iron ore) between North America's Great Lakes.

A fun fact about Chippewa County is that in 1943, the county was declared a strategic military target due to extensive iron ore and limestone transportation via the Soo Locks. In response, the U.S. government built a secret facility called the "Antiaircraft Artillery Training Center" to protect the locks from potential enemy attacks during World War II. Today, this facility is known as the "Soo Locks Park."
