.Clare County, located in the central region of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, was established on March 1, 1840, and officially organized on April 19, 1871. The county gets its name from County Clare, Ireland, reflecting the Irish heritage of many settlers who moved to the area during the 19th century. The county seat is the city of Harrison, which was named after President William Henry Harrison.
Prior to European settlements, the region was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Ojibwa (Chippewa), Ottawa, and Potawatomi. Early settler activity began in the 1860s in Clare County, spurred by the logging industry, which led to rapid growth and development. The arrival of the Pere Marquette Railroad in the 1870s also contributed to the county's expansion.
