Delta County, located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, was established on March 09, 1861. The county seat is in Escanaba, the largest of the six cities within the county. Delta County was named after the Greek letter "delta," which signifies a triangle, as the county's shape is similar to a triangle.

The region was first inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi), who lived and traded in the area. European fur traders and missionaries arrived in the 17th century, followed by settlers involved in the timber and mining industries during the 19th century.

Iron ore and limestone mining played a significant role in the economy of Delta County, and many of these industries still operate today. The area is also known for its timber resources, with the Hiawatha National Forest located partially within the county.

Fun fact: Delta County is home to the historic Fayette State Park, a preserved 19th-century industrial town turned into a living museum. Visitors can explore the town's buildings and learn about Michigan's iron smelting history on the shores of Lake Michigan's Snail Shell Harbor.
