Dickinson County, located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, was established on May 2, 1891. It was created from parts of Menominee, Marquette, and Iron counties. Named after Donald M. Dickinson, a prominent politician and postmaster general under President Grover Cleveland, the currently county seat, Iron Mountain, is the largest city in this area.

The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, particularly the Menominee, before European-American settlers arrived in the 1800s. The region saw rapid development during the 19th century, largely due to the discovery of iron ore deposits. The Chapin Mine, located in Iron Mountain, was particularly significant at the time, and many immigrants flocked to the area seeking jobs in the mining industry. Lumbering was another major industry in the area, as the region was densely forested with white pine, cedar, and hemlock.

Today, Dickinson County has a population of approximately 25,000 people and boasts various cultural, historical, and recreational attractions. One major tourist destination is the Pine Mountain Ski Jump, which is one of the highest artificially-created ski jumps in the world, and hosts several international ski jumping competitions.

Fun Fact: The Menominee Iron Range, from which Dickinson County emerged, is home to the "Iron Mountain Iron Mine," a popular tourist destination where you can experience what life was like for miners who worked in this underground iron mine.
