Genesee County is located in the eastern central region of Michigan, with its county seat in Flint. The county was established on March 28, 1835, during the early years of Michigan's statehood. It was named after Genesee County in New York, which was named after the Seneca word "Gen-nis'-hee-yo," meaning "The Beautiful Valley". The county encompasses an area of about 649 square miles.

The early development of Genesee County can be attributed to the fur trade and lumber industries. It was once home to several Native American tribes, including the Chippewa, Ottawa, and Potawatomi. European settlers began arriving in the area in the 1820s, mainly attracted by the rich farmlands and the Flint River, which provided an important source of water and transportation.

The city of Flint became the most prominent urban center in Genesee County and played an essential role in the county's development. The automotive industry, especially the establishment of General Motors in 1908, transformed Flint into a major manufacturing hub in the 20th century. However, the decline of the auto industry in the latter part of the century led to economic hardships and population loss in the county, mostly in Flint.

Despite these challenges, Genesee County is still known for its cultural institutions such as the Flint Institute of Arts, the Longway Planetarium, the Sloan Museum, and the Whiting Auditorium, which bring art, science, and history to life for its residents.

Fun fact: Genesee County is home to Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad, a historical park that features a restored turn-of-the-century village and a narrow-gauge Huckleberry Railroad that takes visitors on a scenic journey through rural farmland, featuring a steam-powered locomotive. This attraction offers insight into the region's history and serves as a popular destination for both tourists and locals.
