Gogebic County is located in the Upper Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. Established in 1887, it was named after the Ojibwe word "agogebic" or "akogib," which translates to "at the iron" or "at the ironworking," reflecting the region's history of iron ore mining. The county covers an area of about 1,476 square miles and has a population of roughly 15,000 residents.

Apart from iron mining, the logging industry also played a significant role in Gogebic County's early development. With the arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century and early 20th century, the region saw rapid growth in both industries, leading to an increase in population as immigrants and workers arrived to take advantage of the new job opportunities.

One of Gogebic County's many unique features is the presence of Lake Gogebic, which spans over 13,380 acres, making it the largest inland lake in the Upper Peninsula. Surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, the lake is a popular destination for fishing, boating, and other recreational activities, creating a vibrant tourism industry in the region.

A fun fact about Gogebic County is that it is home to the Ottawa National Forest and Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, one of the largest tracts of old-growth hardwood-hemlock forests remaining in North America. This makes Gogebic County an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts, with many hiking trails, waterfalls, and opportunities for wildlife sightings throughout the area.
