Gratiot County, located in the central part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, was founded in 1855 and officially organized on April 14, 1856. Its name likely originates from Captain Charles Gratiot, who served as Chief Engineer in the U.S. Army and was a key figure in developing fortifications to secure the Great Lakes during the War of 1812.

The area was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, predominantly the Chippewa (Ojibwe), Ottawa, and Potawatomi. European settlers eventually arrived, and in 1855 the Michigan Legislature established Gratiot County from portions of Saginaw and St. Clair counties. Major industries in the county included farming, lumbering, and milling, which helped shape its economic development.

The history of the county can be further explored at the Gratiot County Historical Society and the Richland Township Historical Village. Both sites offer extensive collections of artifacts and exhibits, which showcase the area's roots and cultural heritage.
