Hillsdale County is a county located in the southern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, United States. It was founded in 1829 and named after its highest point, the hills that rise along the western bank of the St. Joseph River.

The county played an important role in the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used by slaves to escape to freedom in the 19th century. Many abolitionists and conductors, including Sojourner Truth and Frederick Douglass, passed through Hillsdale County on their journeys to freedom.

One fun fact about Hillsdale County is that it is home to the Hillsdale College, a small liberal arts college known for its conservative values and rigorous academic programs. The college was founded in 1844 and has a rich history of promoting classical education and the principles of limited government and free enterprise.
