Iosco County is located in northeastern Michigan, in the Lower Peninsula region of the United States. The county was originally established as a Native American settlement before European settlers began arriving in the early 19th century. Its name is derived from a Native American word meaning "water", which is fitting, given that Iosco County is bordered by Lake Huron to the east.

The county was officially established on April 1, 1840, but it was not until February 15, 1857, that the county government was organized. In the early days, the region's economy was primarily driven by the timber and fishing industries.

During the logging era (mid-19th century to early 20th century), the area witnessed a surge in activity due to its vast forests. The Au Sable River was a significant transportation route for loggers, making Iosco County a hub for the timber industry. As the forests were depleted, focus shifted towards agriculture and tourism, which remain important pillars of the county's economy today.

One fun fact about Iosco County is that it is home to the Tawas Point State Park, which is located on a peninsula jutting into Lake Huron. The park is famous for its iconic Tawas Point Lighthouse, built in 1876, and offers bird-watching and recreational opportunities, attracting tourists and nature enthusiasts. The park's unique location also creates shallow waters that make it a popular spot for windsurfing along the Great Lakes coastline.
