Lake County is located in the northwestern region of the lower peninsula of the great state of Michigan. Established in 1840, it was initially named Aishcum County after a Potawatomi Native American Chief, but its name was changed to Lake County in 1843. The county spans an area of approximately 574 square miles, with around 156 square miles consisting of water, including numerous lakes, rivers, and streams.

Throughout its history, Lake County has had an emphasis on forest-based industries such as lumbering and forest products. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the lumber trade was the primary economic driver in the region as vast stands of white pine were harvested. Railroads played a pivotal role in the transport of timber and other goods, helping to shape and develop the communities within the area. As the timber resources diminished, Lake County transitioned to a focus on agriculture, including dairy farming and fruit orchards.

Nowadays, Lake County provides a scenic environment for residents and tourists to enjoy various recreational activities, such as hiking, fishing, boating, and hunting. The county features numerous state and national forests, including Manistee National Forest and Pere Marquette State Forest.

Fun fact: Lake County boasts over 150 named lakes, making it a popular destination for water-based recreation, giving the county its alluring name. While each lake contributes to the charm of the region, one of the most popular lakes is Big Bass Lake, renowned for its clear waters and a variety of fish species that make it a favorite spot among fishing enthusiasts.
