Midland County is located in the central region of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. It was established on March 2, 1831, and later organized in 1850. The county seat is the city of Midland. The county was named after its geographic position, as it is situated midway between the Saginaw Bay on Lake Huron and the headwaters of the Grand and Muskegon rivers.

In the early 19th century, the area comprising Midland County was inhabited primarily by Native American tribes, such as the Sauk, Fox, and Ojibwe. European-American settlers didn't begin arriving in significant numbers until the mid-1800s, attracted by the region's vast timber resources. Later, the region transitioned to an agriculture-based economy.

Herbert H. Dow, a prominent figure in the region, founded Dow Chemical Company in Midland in 1897. The company's growth and expansion led to the development of the city of Midland, which became a center for business and industry. In 1943, another significant facility, the Dow Corning Corporation, was established as a joint venture between Dow Chemical Company and Corning Glass Works.

Midland County is also known for its recreational amenities and natural beauty. One fun fact about the region is that it boasts one of the largest contiguous networks of rail-trail in the United States: The Pere Marquette Rail-Trail. This 30-mile-long paved trail connects Midland to Clare and is popular for its opportunities for biking, running, walking, and enjoying the area's natural beauty.
