Montcalm County is located in the central part of the Lower Peninsula in the great state of Michigan. It was established on March 1, 1831, and named after the Marquis de Montcalm, a famous French military officer who served during the French and Indian War. The county was originally settled by Native American tribes, primarily the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi, until European settlers began arriving in the early 19th century, attracted by the fertile lands for agriculture and the potential for trade along its lakes and rivers.

Greenville, the largest city in Montcalm County, was founded in 1844 by John Green, who built the first sawmill in the area. Steady growth led to the development of other towns such as Stanton, which would become the county seat, with the courthouse being built in 1861. Agriculture, particularly dairy farming, has played a significant role in shaping the economic and cultural landscape of Montcalm County throughout its history.
