Newaygo County, located in the state of Michigan, was established on March 2, 1840, but it took until 1850 for the first settlers to arrive. Named after Chief Nuwagon, a leader of the Ojibwe tribe also known as Chief Newaygo, this area covers around 862 square miles and is located in the west-central region of the Lower Peninsula.

The first inhabitants of the region were Native American tribes, primarily the Ottawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi. The county's development accelerated with the arrival of New Englanders, drawn to the area by the vast timber resources during the 19th century. The lumber industry thrived, with sawmills erected along the Muskegon River, and played a key role in shaping the local economy.

The county's economic growth continued, fueled by agricultural expansion and the construction of the Pere Marquette Railroad in the late 19th century. Several communities emerged, including Fremont, White Cloud, Newaygo, and Grant, contributing to a burgeoning population.

Nowadays, Newaygo County is well-known for its natural beauty, with a wealth of outdoor recreational opportunities. Visitors can enjoy numerous lakes, streams, and the picturesque Muskegon River, which runs through the county. Outdoor enthusiasts can take part in various activities like fishing, kayaking, hiking, and snowmobiling.

Fun fact: Newaygo County is home to the "whispering" Giant Sequoia tree in the town of White Cloud. This tree is stated to be the largest eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) in Michigan, measuring 18 feet in circumference and 86 feet in height.
