Osceola County is located in central Michigan and was established on April 1, 1840. Named in honor of Osceola, the famous Seminole chief, the county was originally part of the Unorganized Indian Territory assigned to the state of Michigan in 1834. The county's total area is 573 square miles, with just over 23,000 residents as of the 2020 census.

The first European American settlers arrived in Osceola County in the mid-19th century, primarily settling in the areas along the Muskegon River. These communities consisted mainly of lumbermen and farmers due to the region's dense forests and fertile soil. Osceola County continued to grow over the years, and by 1869, the Pere Marquette Railroad reached the area, which influenced further development and population growth.

Hersey, the oldest village in the county, was established in 1869 and was initially named "Bark Town" because of its thriving bark industry. The bark was used to produce tannin for the leather industry. Reed City, the county seat, was established in 1870 and became an important hub for travelers and commerce due to its strategic location at the intersection of two railroads.

A fun fact about Osceola County is that it is home to the annual Osceola County Fair, which takes place in Evart. The fair has been held continuously since 1875, making it one of the oldest ongoing fairs in the state of Michigan. The Osceola County Fair showcases the area's agricultural roots and provides entertainment, food, and various exhibits for both locals and visitors to enjoy.
