Oscoda County is a beautiful area located in the northeastern part of the Lower Peninsula of the great state of Michigan. Established on April 1, 1840, Oscoda County was initially named Unwattin County after a local Native American chief, but the name was changed to Oscoda in 1843 after the Native American word for "pebble place river" or "saucer-like" to represent the many waterways in the region.

The county is relatively small in population, with a steady decrease in inhabitants over the years; as of the 2020 census, the population was estimated to be around 8,300. The county seat, Mio, is located almost in its geographic center, providing a hub for local community members.

Early settlers in Oscoda County were mainly fur traders and lumberjacks, who took advantage of the county's vast natural resources. At its peak during the late 19th century, the rich supply of white pine forests attracted lumber towns and sawmills, contributing to the growth of the region. The end of the logging era in the early 20th century gave way to the development of the tourism industry, focusing on outdoor recreational activities such as fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling.

One fun fact about Oscoda County is the local legend of the "Michigan Dogman," a mythical lupine creature that is said to have been first sighted in the area in the late 1800s. This mysterious creature has been a source of fascination for locals and visitors alike, inspiring several films, songs, and other forms of storytelling. Despite many alleged sightings, the existence of the Michigan Dogman has never been proven, adding a layer of mystique and local lore to the region.
