Otsego County, located in the great state of Michigan, was initially established on April 1, 1840, but was officially organized on February 2, 1875. It is situated in the northern part of Michigan's Lower Peninsula and occupies an area of 526 square miles. The county, as well as the county seat, Gaylord, was named in honor of Samuel G. Otsego, an American Revolutionary War captain who was an early settler of New York.

Otsego County's history is filled with notable events and milestones that helped shape the region. Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area was home to several Native American tribes, including the Chippewa (Ojibwe) and Ottawa peoples. In the late 1800s, the region witnessed significant development with the arrival of the Michigan Central Railroad, which dramatically improved transportation and boosted the local economy.

The county saw a boom in the logging industry from the 1870s through the 1900s, including the establishment of several lumber towns like Vanderbilt, Elmira, and Waters. However, as the tree supply started to dwindle, so did the county's reliance on lumber production. The local economy experienced a transformation towards tourism and outdoor recreation, which continues to thrive today.

One fun fact about Otsego County is that it is known as the "Alpine Village" due to the Swiss-inspired architecture found in its county seat, Gaylord. This unique character resonates with the spirit of the Alpine region and has become a draw for tourists interested in experiencing a taste of European charm while still being in Northern Michigan. Winter sports, especially skiing, have grown popular in the area, further contributing to this Alpine motif.
