Ottawa County, located in the southwestern region of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, has a rich historical background. The area was first inhabited by indigenous peoples, specifically the Ottawa tribe, who were known for their trade and negotiation skills. In fact, the county's name is derived from this tribe. European settlement in the region began in the early 19th century, with Dutch immigrants being among the first to arrive and establish communities.

Ottawa County was officially founded in 1831, and its development was significantly influenced by the lumber and furniture industries, as well as agriculture, throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. Grand Haven, the county seat, became an important transportation hub, with the Grand River and Lake Michigan offering strategic waterways for shipping and trade.

The county experienced substantial growth during the late 20th century, driven by a combination of industry, tourism, and residential development. As of the 2010 census, the population of Ottawa County exceeded 260,000 residents, making it one of the fastest-growing regions in the state of Michigan.

One fun fact about Ottawa County is that it is home to Michigan's only remaining wooden-frame lighthouse: the Grand Haven South Pierhead Lighthouse. This historic structure, built in 1872, is a favorite destination for tourists, and the surrounding Grand Haven State Park offers a beautiful setting for beach activities, outdoor recreation, and soaking in the stunning views of Lake Michigan.
