Saint Joseph County is located in the southwest region of the U.S. state of Michigan. It was established on October 27, 1829, making it one of the oldest counties in Michigan. The county was named in honor of Saint Joseph, a Catholic saint highly venerated throughout the Great Lakes region. It covers an area of approximately 521 square miles and has a population of around 60,000 people.

In the early nineteenth century, the area of Saint Joseph County was inhabited by members of the Potawatomi and Miami tribes. European settlers from primarily New England and New York began to populate the area in the 1820s and 1830s. One of the early settlers, John T. Bell, is credited with founding the first settlement in the county, known as White Pigeon, around 1827.

Agriculture has played a significant role in the local economy, with corn, soybeans, and livestock dominating the landscape. The area is also known for its numerous picturesque lakes and rivers, making it a popular recreation destination in Michigan. The county seat, Centreville, is home to the St. Joseph County Courthouse and other historic sites, showcasing the evolution of this region.
