Sanilac County is located in the eastern part of the lower peninsula of Michigan, along the Lake Huron shoreline. It was first established in 1822 as part of St. Clair County and was later separated in 1848 as a distinct entity, with Lexington as the first county seat. In 1879, the county seat was moved to its current location in Sandusky.

The history of Sanilac County is shaped by the Woodland Indians who initially inhabited the region, followed by the arrival of French explorers in the 17th century who had a strong influence on the Native American tribes. During the early 1800s, European settlers of mainly German, Irish, and English descent began arriving and quickly developed the area with agriculture and lumbering, both of which remain major industries in the county today.

Sanilac County's name is believed to be derived from an Ojibwe word "Sanilac," which means "rocky cliff" or "rocky shore." The area is well-known for its beautiful beaches, parks, and opportunities for outdoor recreation, including the popular Sanilac County Underwater Preserve, which is a protected area featuring numerous historic shipwreck sites that attract scuba divers from around the world.

Fun fact: The Sanilac Petroglyphs, located in Sanilac County, are the largest collection of Native American rock carvings in Michigan. These ancient petroglyphs, estimated to be about 400-1,000 years old, include images of humans, animals, and various symbols, giving a unique glimpse into the culture of the region's early inhabitants.
