Shiawassee County is located in the central part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, USA. Established on September 10, 1822, it was later organized in 1837. The county was named after the Shiawassee River, which runs through the area. In Ojibwe, the word "Shiawassee" means "twisting river" or "river that twists," reflecting the river's unique course.

The first European settler in Shiawassee County was Benjamin Cushway, a French-Canadian fur trader, who settled near the present-day Corunna in 1819. The prominent growth in the county started after the completion of the Chicago and North Western Railway, which connected the area to the rest of the country.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Shiawassee County had a predominantly agricultural economy, with dairy farming being the main focus. Durand, the county's largest city, gained prominence as a major railroad hub in the early 1900s, and Owosso, the county seat, was known for its manufacturing industries.

One notable fun fact about the Shiawassee County is that Thomas Edison, the legendary inventor, worked as a telegraph operator at the train station in the small town of Lennon. Edison was stationed there for only a brief period but during his time, he was able to secure a patent for his invention, an automatic telegraph repeater, which improved mass communication of that era.
