Van Buren County is located in the southwestern region of the state of Michigan in the United States. Established in 1829, the county was named in honor of Martin Van Buren, who was the U.S. Secretary of State at the time, and later became the 8th President of the United States. The county's seat is Paw Paw, which was founded in 1837 by the territorial governor.

The region was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, primarily the Potawatomi, who were later forced out of their lands due to the increasing migration of European settlers. With its fertile soil, abundant resources, and access to waterways, Van Buren County attracted these settlers for farming and commercial activities.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Van Buren County's economy primarily relied on agriculture, with the growth of various crops such as fruit, celery, and mint. The county also experienced a growth in the lumber industry, which led to the development of towns along the shorelines of Lake Michigan.

A fun fact about Van Buren County is that it is home to the city of South Haven, which is known as the "Blueberry Capital of the World." In addition to being a center for blueberry research, the city also hosts the National Blueberry Festival every year, celebrating the importance of this fruit to the local economy and cultural heritage.
