Brown County is located in southern Minnesota and is part of the Great Plains region of the United States. Established on February 20, 1855, the county was named after Joseph Renshaw Brown, an influential regional newspaper publisher, politician, and Indian agent.

The county seat is in New Ulm, a city founded by German immigrants in 1854. Due to the presence of the German immigrants, the region has a rich cultural heritage and celebrates German-American customs even today. Early settlers in the region relied primarily on agriculture and forestry, with farming being the dominant industry in the county.

The Dakota War of 1862 was a significant historical event that took place in the area. It involved a series of conflicts between the Dakota Sioux and European-American settlers in Minnesota, ultimately leading to the relocation of the Sioux to reservations further west.

Fun Fact: Brown County is home to August Schell Brewing Company, established in 1860. This brewery is the second oldest family-owned brewery in the United States. August Schell Brewing Company is an important part of the region's heritage and is well-known for its German-style beers.
