Chisago County is located in the eastern part of the great state of Minnesota and plays a significant role in the state's history. Established on March 1, 1851, the county was named after Chisago Lake, which was named by the Ojibwe (Chippewa) Native Americans. The word "Chisago" derives from the Ojibwe term "Ki-chi-saga-igan," meaning "large and lovely lake." The county is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington metropolitan area.

The first European settlers in the region were primarily Swedish immigrants who started arriving in the 1850s, attracted by the rich farmland and logging opportunities provided by the woody terrain. The county's rich Swedish heritage is still evident today in its cultural events, architecture, and local attractions. One of the most popular attractions is the Chisago County Historical Society, which preserves and highlights the area's history and operates several museums and historical sites.

The construction of the St. Paul and Duluth Railroad in the late 19th century led to an economic boom and increased settlement in Chisago County. The processes of logging, milling, dairy farming, and agriculture production thrived in this area throughout the early to mid-twentieth century.

Fun Fact: Chisago County was the setting of the classic 1948 novel "The Emigrants" written by Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg. The book chronicles the journey of a group of Swedish emigrants, who chose to settle in Chisago County in search of a better life. This connection makes Chisago County an important cultural site for Swedish-Americans and contributes to the strong historical ties with Sweden.
