Clearwater County is located in the great state of Minnesota and was established on February 20, 1902. It got its name from the translation of the Ojibwe language word "Gawakomitgweia," which means "clear water." The county has its seat in Bagley and covers an area of approximately 1,030 square miles.

The county is characterized by a beautiful landscape that includes farmlands, wetlands, woodlands, and picturesque lake country, which is situated in the heart of the White Earth Indian Reservation. The reservation, covering a significant portion of the county, houses members of the Anishinaabe or Ojibwe tribe and is considered one of the six component reservations of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe.

Originally, Clearwater County was part of Beltrami County, and for around six decades starting from 1858, Polk and Red Lake Counties framed the southern and northern boundaries, respectively. The area witnessed an influx of European settlers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who engaged mostly in agriculture and logging.

A fun fact about Clearwater County is that it is home to the mysterious Lake Itasca, the primary source of the Mississippi River. Lake Itasca is situated in the southeastern corner of the county, within the boundaries of Itasca State Park, which is Minnesota's oldest state park. With over 100 lakes in the county, visitors and residents can enjoy a multitude of recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and swimming.
