Cottonwood County is located in southwestern Minnesota. As of the 2019 census, the population of Cottonwood County was 11,199. The racial makeup of the county was 96.2% White, 0.7% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.3% Black or African American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, and 1.9% from two or more races. The median household income was $48,744, and the median family income was $54,779.

The majority of Cottonwood County's population lives in rural areas, with a few small cities and towns scattered throughout the county. The largest city is Windom, which has a population of around 4,500 people. The county is home to a number of lakes, rivers and streams as well as lush woodlands and rolling farmlands. Agriculture is an important part of the local economy, with corn and soybeans being the main crops grown in the area. Other industries include manufacturing, retail and tourism.

The county has several public schools that provide education to students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Health care services are provided by two hospitals and several clinics. There are also a number of public libraries available in the county for residents to use.
