Cottonwood County is located in the southern region of the great state of Minnesota. It was established on May 23, 1857, and named after the Cottonwood River, which runs through the county. The origin of the river's name is derived from the Dakota language, where "Waraju" means cottonwood (a species of poplar tree), which were abundant along the riverbanks.

The county seat is Windom, the largest city in Cottonwood County, named in honor of William Windom, a US Senator from Minnesota who served from 1881 to 1883 and 1883 to 1889. The total area of the county is approximately 649 square miles (1,680 square kilometers), with a majority of this landmass being used for agricultural purposes.

Cottonwood County has a diverse cultural history, with settlers primarily of German, Norwegian, and Irish descent. Throughout its history, agriculture played a significant role in the region's economy. It is known for producing corn, soybeans, and raising livestock.

A fun fact about Cottonwood County is the presence of the Jeffers Petroglyphs, a series of preserved Native American rock carvings on a site stretching 160 acres. These carvings are dated between 9000 to 7000 years old and offer insight into the spiritual and cultural lives of the indigenous tribes that once inhabited the region, such as the ancestors of Sioux and Ojibwa people. Visitors can explore and learn about these ancient carvings, which hold great cultural and historical significance.
