Faribault County is located in southern Minnesota and is named after Jean-Baptiste Faribault, a fur trader of French-Canadian descent who was influential in the area during the early 19th century. The county was officially established on February 20, 1855, and has its seat in Blue Earth, which is also one of the largest towns in the county.

Before the arrival of European settlers, the land was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Dakota Sioux. The region was explored by the French and the British before eventually becoming part of the United States through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Settlement in the area accelerated during the 1850s as pioneers, mainly from New England and other Eastern states, moved westward to seek new farmland and opportunities.

The rich and fertile soil of Faribault County, drained by the Blue Earth River and its tributaries, made it ideal for agriculture. Throughout its history, the county's economy has been based predominantly on farming, with a focus on crops such as corn, soybeans, and wheat, as well as livestock production.

A fun fact about Faribault County is that the small town of Blue Earth is home to the Jolly Green Giant Statue, which stands 55 feet tall and was erected in 1979. This iconic statue pays tribute to the successful Minnesota-based food company, Green Giant, and has become a popular roadside attraction for travelers passing through the area.
