Goodhue County, located in the southeastern region of the great state of Minnesota, was established on March 5, 1853, and named in honor of James Madison Goodhue. Goodhue, originally from New Hampshire, was the editor of the first newspaper in Minnesota, the Minnesota Pioneer. The county seat of Goodhue is Red Wing, home to renowned pottery and shoe companies.

In the early days, Goodhue County was inhabited by the Dakota Sioux Indians, who valued it for its natural resources, hunting, and fertile land. The first European settlers in the region were fur traders and missionaries before a wave of mainly Scandinavian and German immigrants came in during the 1850s, contributing to agricultural developments. The county experienced a significant population boom in the late 19th century due to farming, pottery, milling, and a flourishing shoe industry.

Red Wing, in Goodhue County, is home to several historic and culturally relevant sites, including the Sheldon Theatre, which opened in 1904, and the Red Wing Shoe Company, one of the most famous shoe manufacturers in the United States. Goodhue County is also known for its parks and natural beauty, offering hiking, biking, and sightseeing opportunities at locations such as the Barn Bluff, Cannon Valley Trail, Frontenac State Park, and Lake Byllesby Regional Park.

A fun fact about Goodhue County is that the city of Red Wing is the source of the now-famous Red Wing Shoes. The company's boots have a historical significance in American workwear culture and have been worn by workers for more than a century. Established in 1905 by Charles H. Beckman, Red Wing Shoes still retains its celebrated reputation for manufacturing high-quality, durable work boots.
