Itasca County is located in the northeastern region of the great state of Minnesota. It was established on October 27, 1849, as one of Minnesota's original nine counties; however, it had no organized government until February 23, 1857. Itasca County got its name from Lake Itasca, which is situated within the county boundaries and is considered the source of the Mississippi River. The word "Itasca" came from Latin words "ver itas ca'put," meaning "true head."

The county has a rich history of logging and mining industries, with several lumber camps and towns being established in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Minnesota and International Railway was also extended to this region to transport timber during this period. Iron ore mining flourished in this region as Itasca County played a significant role in the iron ore industry, a major contributor in the development of the United States.

A fun fact about Itasca County is that it houses the well-known Chippewa National Forest, the first national forest reserve established in the United States. It comprises over 667,000 acres with abundant wildlife, scenic landscapes, and numerous recreational opportunities. This region also includes the Lost Forty, which is an area of virgin pines that were not logged as a result of a surveying error, making it a popular attraction for nature enthusiasts.
