Kandiyohi County is located in the great state of Minnesota, situated in the west-central region of the state. The county was officially established on March 20, 1858, and was named after Kandiyohi, a Dakota Native American word meaning "where the buffalo fish come." The county seat is Willmar, and the total area of the county is 862 square miles, of which 787 square miles are land and 75 square miles are water.

The first European settlers arrived in the area in the 1850s, and since then, it has been predominantly an agricultural region. The construction of the Great Northern Railway and the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway in the 1860s and 1870s contributed significantly to the area's economic development, connecting it to larger markets.

Throughout its history, Kandiyohi County has experienced several important events, including the Dakota War of 1862, a conflict between the United States and the eastern Sioux or Dakota Native Americans that led to the execution of 38 Dakota warriors, the largest mass execution in U.S. history.

A fun fact about Kandiyohi County is that it is home to 200 freshwater lakes, which provide ample recreational opportunities for local residents and tourists alike. The abundance of lakes has earned the region the nickname "Land of 200 Lakes."
