Kittson County is located in the northwestern corner of the great state of Minnesota. It was first established as part of Pembina County in 1843, which was later split into Kittson and Marshall Counties in 1878. The county was named after Canadian fur trader and railway entrepreneur Norman Kittson, who played a significant role in the economic development of the region.

The county seat is Hallock, which is also the largest city in the county. Historically, Kittson County was home to several Native American tribes, including the Dakota, Assiniboine, and Ojibwe. European settlers, primarily Scandinavian and French Canadian, started to populate the area in the 19th century, drawn by its fertile soil and abundant water resources.

The county's economy has primarily been based on agriculture, with a focus on farming and livestock. Wheat, corn, soybeans, sugar beets, and alfalfa are some of the common crops grown in the area. The Red River of the North runs through the county, playing a crucial role in the region's agricultural prosperity.

A fun fact about Kittson County is that it is home to the Lake Bronson State Park, which was developed in the 1930s as part of the New Deal. The park's centerpiece is a large, serpentine dam known as the "WPA Dam," built by the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression. This dam created a reservoir, providing a recreational resource for the region, as well as helping prevent soil erosion and improve wildlife habit. The park offers a variety of recreational activities with its forests, prairies, and lakes, making it a popular destination for residents and visitors alike.
