Lake of the Woods County, located in the great state of Minnesota, has a rich historical background. Situated in the northwestern part of the state, this county was established on November 28, 1922, and was named after the Lake of the Woods, a significant water body in the region. The county seat is Baudette.

The area that now constitutes Lake of the Woods County has a long history of human habitation, with native tribes like the Sioux and the Ojibwe having lived in the region for centuries. European exploration in the area began in the early 17th century with French fur traders establishing trade posts along the region's waterways.

In 1732, a French fort named Fort Saint Charles was constructed on the northwest shore of the Lake of the Woods. This fort played a significant role in protecting the French fur trade in the area during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). After the war, the region was ceded to the British, and eventually, the Minnesota Territory was created in 1849.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, logging and commercial fishing industries in the region experienced significant growth. Several settlements were founded, many of which served as collection points for logging operations. The Rainy River Gold Rush in the 1890s accelerated the development of the area, boosting its population and infrastructure.

One fun fact about Lake of the Woods County is that it features the Northwest Angle, which is the northernmost point of the contiguous United States. The Angle can only be accessed via land by first crossing through Canada or by boat across the Lake of the Woods.
