Mahnomen County, located in the great state of Minnesota, was officially created on December 27, 1906, and was named after the Ojibwe word for "wild rice" - "manoomin." Covering approximately 583 square miles of land, it is situated in the Northwestern part of the state and is part of the White Earth Indian Reservation.

Before the establishment of Mahnomen County, the land was inhabited for centuries by the Anishinaabe people, particularly the Ojibwe tribe. European settlers arrived in the area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The establishment of the White Earth Indian Reservation in 1867 played a significant role in shaping the region, as it sought to provide land and resources for local tribes after they had signed a series of treaties with the US government. Mahnomen County's economy was primarily reliant on agriculture, timber production, and wild rice harvesting for a significant portion of its history.

One fun fact about the Mahnomen County area is that it is home to the Shooting Star Casino, a popular destination for entertainment and gaming that attracts visitors from all around the region. The casino, owned and operated by the White Earth Nation, opened in 1991 and has since expanded to include a hotel and event center, offering various amenities and attractions to its guests.
