Martin County is located in the southern part of the great state of Minnesota. Established on February 27, 1857, it was named in honor of Henry Martin, an early Minnesota territorial and state legislator, as well as an important figure in the Minnesota militia during the Dakota War of 1862. The county is part of the rolling landscapes of southern Minnesota, which were created by glaciers during the last Ice Age.

The county seat of Martin County is Fairmont, which was founded in the early 1850s as the first settlers arrived in the area. Its population has grown steadily since then, with the agricultural industry, especially in corn and soybean production, being a significant contributor to the economy. Additionally, over time, industries such as meat processing have also grown in Martin County.

Notable historical events in Martin County include its role in the aftermath of the Dakota War of 1862, during which several military campaigns operated in the region. Being a border county between Minnesota and Iowa, Martin County also played a part in the Underground Railroad, helping escaped enslaved people find their way to freedom.
