Established on February 20, 1855, the county was named in honor of John Edward Mower, a prominent Minnesota statesman and territorial legislator. Mower County is part of the Austin Micropolitan Statistical Area and encompasses approximately 711 square miles.

The county's rich history dates back to the early 1850s when settlers from Eastern and Midwestern states began to migrate to the area due to its fertile soil and abundant water resources. These settlers founded the first settlements in Mower County, which included the communities of Frankford, Racine, and Brownsdale.
