Murray County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Minnesota. Established on May 23, 1857, it was named in honor of William Pitt Murray, a prominent lawyer and legislator based in St. Paul, Minnesota. However, county offices and organization only began functioning in 1872 due to a low population in the region.

The land in the Murray County area was primarily used for agriculture, with the Minnesota River Valley and Buffalo Ridge providing fertile grounds. The first settlers, mainly of Norwegian, Swedish, Irish, Scottish, and Belgian descent, arrived in the 1860s and 1870s. The expansion of railways in the area brought in more settlers and contributed to the growth of the county.

An interesting fun fact about Murray County is that it is home to Lake Shetek - the largest lake in southwestern Minnesota. The name "Shetek" is derived from the Ojibwe word "zheta" which translates to "pelican", due to the presence of American White Pelican populations in the area. The lake played a significant role in the region's history, specifically in the establishment of early settlements and the events that unfolded during the Dakota War of 1862. Today, Lake Shetek State Park remains a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for fishing, boating, and camping.
