Renville County is located in the great state of Minnesota and was founded on February 20, 1855. Named after Joseph Renville, a fur trader and influential Metis leader, the county played an essential role in the region's history due to its strategic location along several key waterways, particularly the Minnesota River.

The county's early history was marked by the presence of the Dakota Native American tribes, who had a strong connection with the land. As European settlers moved into the area during the 19th century, tensions arose between the settlers and the Dakota people. This led to the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, a significant conflict in the county's history, which resulted in the forced relocation of the Dakota people to reservations and the movement of many European settlers out of the Minnesota River Valley.

The county's population grew steadily during the second half of the 19th century due to increased agricultural activity. This was mainly driven by the fertile soil, suitable for growing cash crops such as corn, soybeans, and wheat, as well as the presence of the railroad, which provided an effective means of transportation.

Throughout the 20th century, Renville County continued to develop, with agriculture remaining the leading industry. Widespread infrastructure improvements and expanding education and healthcare systems contributed to the region's growth.

One fun fact about Renville County is that it hosts the annual "King Turkey Day" celebration in the city of Olivia. The event, which began in 1938, celebrates the region's robust turkey farming industry and includes various festive activities such as turkey races, parades, and a carnival. This unique celebration highlights the county's agricultural roots and strong sense of community.
