Saint Louis County, located in the northeastern part of the great state of Minnesota, is the largest county by land area in the state and east of the Mississippi River in the United States. The county was established and named in honor of King Louis IX of France on February 20, 1855. Saint Louis County originally included parts of Lake and Koochiching counties, which were later separated in 1856 and 1906, respectively.

The region has a rich history with its roots in the fur trade, with French and British explorers making alliances with local indigenous tribes who resided in the area, such as the Dakota and Ojibwe. The county's economy thrived, primarily due to the iron ore mining industry, centered around the Mesabi Range in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It remains one of the largest iron ore mining regions in the United States. Additionally, the city of Duluth, which is the county seat, became an important center for the shipping and transportation industries, given its strategic location on Lake Superior's westernmost point.

A fun fact about Saint Louis County is that it is home to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), a pristine and remote wilderness comprising over 1 million acres of lakes, rivers, and dense forests, offering some of the best canoeing and camping experiences in the nation. It is a popular destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers, attracting more than 100,000 visitors annually.
